What varieties of raspberries are best suited for the Moscow region?

Raspberries are deciduous shrubs. Its stems grow on average 2 years and reach a height of 2 meters. At the age of two, they become stiff and dry. Such shoots need pruning. The leaves of the shrub have an oval, complex shape, they are dark green above, and pubescent and white below. The flowers are small, white, collected in a brush. Flowering in the middle lane occurs in June-July.

The fruits are pubescent drupe berries, fused into a complex fruit with many small elements. Natural color is red. But many varieties of yellow, white, pink, ruby, burgundy and even black color have been bred. Their fruiting begins in the second year after planting. Some varieties need a garter. And almost everything is in thinning.

All types of raspberries are divided into 4 categories:

  • regular or traditional;
  • standard;
  • large-fruited;
  • remontant.

Detailed characteristics of raspberry varieties belonging to these species are given below:

  1. 1. Plain raspberry.

The traditional raspberry is the oldest and most proven type of plant. It is well adapted to specific climatic conditions and soil, annually produces many layers. According to varietal characteristics, traditional varieties are closer to wild raspberries. They are winter-hardy and unpretentious, they have a pronounced taste. But they also do not bear fruit abundantly.

This type of raspberry is also divided into early, middle and late. A little about each of these subspecies:

  • Varieties of early ripening. Their advantage is that they ripen at a time when other berries or fruits have not yet ripened. The collection of these berries takes place from mid-June to early July. The disadvantage of this subspecies is its early flowering and the risk of freezing flowers during spring frosts. These fruits are very delicate and spoil quickly. Characteristics of varieties of early fruiting are presented in the table below.
  • Varieties of medium fruiting period. They ripen in mid-July and have a fairly short fruiting time. They are classified as varieties with a stable yield, tk. their flowering takes place in warm weather and the flower buds do not freeze slightly. The characteristics of these varieties are presented in the table below.
  • Berries with late ripening. The time for their ripeness comes in the 20th of July and early August. They have stable fruiting. When planted next to other species, they allow you to create a continuous stream of fresh berries throughout the summer. The characteristics of their best representatives are presented in the table below.
  1. 2. Standard raspberry.

This variety is called. It is distinguished by the following features:

  • Shoots are upright, stocky, with dense wood. Reach a length of up to one and a half meters.
  • It does not need supports and a garter. This makes it easier to take care of her.
  • It blooms very densely and during this period it looks elegant and decorative.

When planting such raspberries, it should be borne in mind that this is not a shrub form and it needs more space than other varieties.

It was obtained at the end of the last century by Moscow breeders and has been successfully zoned in the Moscow region for about two decades. Among them are many remontant varieties. In the table below, you can find the best representatives of standard raspberries.

  1. 3. Large-fruited raspberries.

An important feature of this variety is the ability for abundant branching of fruit shoots. Thus, more than five orders of branching can form on a bush, and up to 40 berries can be obtained from one branch in this way, which in general is a weight of half a kilogram. That is, there are two high indicators at the same time - the mass of the berry and the number of fruit buds.

But this gene is very unstable, over the years the varieties need to be updated, because. berries shrink. In addition, these varieties need special care and rich soil, because. they are more capricious than other plant species. for the Moscow region are presented in the table below.

  1. 4. Repair raspberry.

A special species is remontant raspberry, which bears fruit up to three times per season, and even in the middle lane it bears fruit already in the first season. Only the first frost interrupts fruiting. Usually its early fruits are smaller than the later ones. These plants tolerate frost well and are resistant to diseases. For the Moscow region, medium varieties are most suitable, the berries on which appear from August to mid-autumn. The best varieties of remontant raspberries for the Moscow region are shown in the table below.
