I will make a reservation right away: we will not discuss how to destroy moles. Despite the damage they cause, I have good feelings for these animals and do not want to destroy them. But I really want them to live peacefully and breed somewhere else - not on my site. Therefore, we will talk about how to expel moles from your territory without harming them.
Yes, here's what else you need to understand: the same method can be effective for some and completely useless for others, so how many people - so many opinions. I don’t know how to explain this, but the fact is that in order to understand what will work exactly on your site, you will have to test different methods in the field, so to speak.
Sounds and smells
The most common recommendations for scaring away moles are associated with the use of all kinds of odorous substances or noisy devices - we'll start with them. Are moles afraid of smells?
It is believed that an unpleasant smell for animals can force them to leave an unfriendly territory. Perhaps someone managed to get rid of moles in this way, but my experience tells me that this is an extremely inefficient method, and completely regardless of the type of "smelly weapon".Most often, it is advised to put the “smell” directly into the mole passages. Well ... I stuffed molehills and; my friends made plugs from rags soaked kerosene or ammonia. resort to rotten fish and spoiled eggs none of us took the risk - we were afraid to leave the “battlefield” before our opponent :) So, we had the same result: the “stinky” move of the little animals was ignored, but they dug out a couple of new ones nearby.
It is believed that the imperial hazel grouse repels moles. But moles don't know about it. A photo
It is also advised to plant plants around the perimeter of the site, which moles do not like. Among them are called , hemp and . Seeding cannabis is obviously a bad idea (this weed has a bad reputation, you know ...) I plant beans every year and in large quantities. Yes, in the plantings of beans and in the immediate vicinity of them, I never found molehills. But she didn’t even try to plant all her lands with beans ... If anyone has tried, share the result!
Well, as for the hazel grouse ... Yes, its bulbs (like the bulbs of some species) have an unpleasant odor. And the bulbs are completely poisonous. Therefore, it is believed that their planting along the perimeter of other plantations creates a protective barrier against moles and rodents. From practice: moles repeatedly plowed up a plot for me in the immediate vicinity of a flower garden with hazel grouse and daffodils. Maybe they had a runny nose...
In other words, my experience and the experience of my summer residents acquaintances unequivocally testify against the idea of using smells in the fight against moles. Although, maybe this method works for someone ...
Noise and vibration against moles
I love silence, and in the garden I prefer the singing of birds and the rustling of leaves, rather than the clanging of iron. Therefore, from using rattling cans I refused right away: I will completely leave the site with such “music” before the moles. Fortunately (or unfortunately, since now we cannot evaluate the effectiveness of this method), none of my neighbors and acquaintances also used this method - for similar reasons. And here windmills (weathervanes, turntables) we experienced. The conclusions are as follows:
- design windmill-repeller has the meaning and directly affects the effectiveness of the method;
- the action of such a repeller is always limited to small space, and in order to achieve results on a site-wide scale, you need to install many windmills.
Wind vane creates vibration
To enhance the effect, first a piece of plastic pipe was installed vertically (its lower end was buried 10-15 centimeters deep into the ground), then a wind vane support was placed in this pipe. When the turntable was spinning, a vibration was transmitted along the support pin, which was amplified by the pipe. In general, this design turned out to be weak, flimsy, and the plastic support is not the best suited for this purpose. But even near such a structure, the activity of moles has noticeably decreased.
Much more efficient plastic bottle spinner mounted on a metal pin. The lower end of the pin also goes deep into the soil, and the bottle with cut-out blades creates both noise and vibration under the action of the wind. The design is incredibly simple and really works (tested!) - but in a rather limited space. That is, there will be no moles near the turntable, and a few meters from it they are already digging without problems.
What it looks like and how it works plastic bottle repeller you can see in the next video.
Pay attention to the phrase: "I have the whole garden in these bottles." This is another practical confirmation of what was said earlier: such a tool does work, but it is effective only in a limited area. To completely expel moles from the site, you will have to put a lot of turntables.
And the next video describes in detail and shows the manufacturing process of another (not vertical, but horizontal) design mole repeller from a plastic bottle. It also works on the principle of a weather vane. In addition to vibration, the device makes noise, and all this together “gets on the nerves” of the mole
However, as in the previous version, one weather vane-repeller will not work - you should install several turntables in different places on the site.
Thus, unlike smells, noise and vibration can really scare away moles and encourage them to move away from the site. Actually, it is this property that is used in various industrial models of repellers.
Factory made repellers
Repellers, which are produced by both domestic and foreign manufacturers, drive away moles either due to published sounds, or at the expense vibration. Moreover, if we are talking specifically about sound devices, then we must take into account: they can use ultrasound (we do not hear it, but moles hear it, and they do not like it) or sounds perceived by humans. Before choosing the second option, think about whether it will get on your nerves in the same way as the underground inhabitants. The second nuance: devices can work solar-powered or require installation conventional batteries.
Repellers deserve a separate discussion: to understand a considerable number of models offered by different manufacturers, and the criteria for choosing them, you need a more detailed overview than the scope of this article allows. "Biological weapons"
After all the experiments, I tend to think that the most effective remedy for moles and mice on the site is good. And better - two :) In any case, it was the appearance of tailed hunters in my garden that made the diggers finally move. And the neighbor says that in a couple of seasons her cat completely ousted the enemy from the territory of the site - molehills no longer appear.
Cats are a reliable remedy for moles. A photo
True, there is one essential circumstance: the spirit of a cat alone is not enough. It is necessary that the animal successfully hunted underground inhabitants, that is, it posed a real threat to them. And, alas, far from all representatives of the cat tribe cope with this task (but there are those who perfectly catch small digging animals!).
Yes, this method cannot be called absolutely humane: a certain number of moles inevitably become victims. But the rest leave dangerous places, not wanting to be at risk. I will not vouch for the absolute effectiveness of the method, but I noticed the results of the work of cats in my garden.
"Border is locked tight"
I also read about one method that simply amazed me: how did the moles have to “get” a person so that he invented something like this ... The essence of the method: it is taken fine mesh metal mesh(so that a mole or mouse does not crawl through, and a worm or insect can safely cross the border) and digs around the perimeter of the entire (!) Plot to a depth of at least half a meter! From above, there are also 15-20 centimeters of mesh, which are attached to the fence. In this way, an insurmountable barrier is created for moles (and other living creatures larger than a fly), and they cannot physically penetrate the site from the outside. Probably, the method is effective (at least until the mesh rusts and begins to crumble). But as for me, such a volume of earthworks is clearly beyond my strength ...
A few words about good neighborliness
Finally, I want to say about one nuance that is often forgotten in the heat of the struggle. When we expel moles from our site, they need to go somewhere, live somewhere. Where will they go? That's right - to the nearest dacha, to our neighbors. So, when planning a "military operation", it is still worth warning your inner circle - let them get ready to meet the "guests". Otherwise it doesn't work well...Have you ever kicked moles out of the area? What methods did you use for this? Which of them have proven to be effective, and which have proven useless?
