Types of multimedia products. Russian multimedia products

Multimedia is one of those software areas in which the “national character” manifests itself to the maximum, so in this special issue we dedicate a separate article to it.

The concept of multimedia is very broad, in this article we will focus exclusively on home products. Home multimedia discs can be conditionally divided into entertaining and educational. In turn, educational products can be implemented in the form of encyclopedic and reference publications, training programs or educational games. Platforms for creating curricula are allocated in a separate class. These are a kind of universal constructors, on the basis of which the teacher creates his own set of lessons and tests. You can read more about training programs and tools for their development in the article "Computer-based training programs and tools for their development", published in this issue of the journal.

In this article, along with consideration of educational multimedia products, we will dwell on domestic games in detail.

It should be noted that in the past two years there has been a literally breakthrough in the development of games in our country. Russian developments are becoming popular in the Western market, even though it is extremely saturated. Our developers manage to captivate the western spoiled user. Projects "IL-2 Sturmovik" (developer - "1C: MaddoxGames", publisher - "1C"), "Corsairs" (developer - "Akella", publisher - "1C", "Truckers-2" (developer - SoftLab-Nsk , publisher - "1C") - all these are examples of projects that occupy the first lines of the hit parades on Western sites. Each of these masterpieces is developing, the next versions are in development - "Corsairs-2", "Truckers-3"; probably soon popular games will have as many episodes as the popular TV series.But despite the success in the Western market, our developers do not forget about domestic game lovers.Obviously, such projects as the animated quest "12 chairs", which is being developers from Voronezh - the Saturn Plus company, new games about the Pilot brothers, which are being developed by 1C, or games about the Wolf and the Hare from the popular cartoon "Just you wait!", which have recently appeared on our market, are aimed specifically at the Russian user. about everything by the way dku: as always, first of all, let's talk about new products and those projects that are still being prepared for release.

Educational multimedia products

quite a lot of companies operate in this market; we will tell you very briefly about the latest developments prepared by the leaders of this direction - the companies "1C", "Cyril and Methodius", "New Disc", "MediaHouse".

Educational multimedia products of the 1C company

If earlier the 1C company was strongly associated with the concepts of "accounting" and "automation", today the 1C trademark is known far beyond the scope of management. Millions of children know 1C as a "toy" company, and thousands of teachers are familiar with it as a manufacturer of educational software products. However, as representatives of 1C itself testify, in quantitative terms, the multimedia direction has long bypassed “business software”. In 2001, 1C released a number of educational products. A major project “1C: Tutor. Mathematics (Part 1)”, the development of the 1C: Education platform was announced. This year, it is planned to release over 50 titles in the 1C: Tutor, 1C: Educational Collection, 1C: World of Computer series, etc.

Platform "1C: Education"

The 1C: Education platform being developed provides ample opportunities for creating electronic publications, training and examination courses, maintaining libraries of presentation and test material and their constituent elements, distributing and monitoring the assimilation of courses at the level of group and personal work.

The platform consists of a server part (core) and an extensible set of basic components (applications). The server part is made in Java, which allows it to work under various operating systems.

The 1C:Education platform will allow partners and users to perform flexible settings for a specific task. The solution, implemented on the 1C: Education platform, can be easily scaled from the local to the Internet version.

Replenishment of a series of training programs "1C: Tutor"

Funny characters will teach quick counting, names and notation of numbers, help train memory. The program can be adjusted according to the age of the child. The complexity of the proposed new tasks is determined by previous achievements.

"Professor Higgins. German without an accent! scheduled for release in June. The product was created by a domestic developer - the Istra-Soft company, the program will be released in the 1C: Educational Collection series. At one time we tested the product “Professor Higgins. English without an accent! and were quite satisfied with them. The teaching of English phonetics was especially well implemented there. We hope that learning German is done no less qualitatively.

Laboratory of multimedia systems. Mari State Technical University

On the pages of our magazine, we often talk about the products of well-known Moscow companies. However, in other cities of our country there are quite a few development centers where products of very high quality are created. We would like to draw your attention to the products of the Multimedia Systems Laboratory of the Mari State Technical University.

In this center, a multimedia course in chemistry was created, which was awarded the prize of an international exhibition. The course includes the following discs:

  • "General and inorganic chemistry";
  • "Organic chemistry";
  • "Chemistry. Basic course".

The developers' approach to creating educational multimedia discs is unusual and based on 3D metaphors. The basic idea is that the computer screen is like a window into a new world. The metaphors of "theatre" and "circus", represented by means of 3D graphics and elements of virtual reality, are the basis for the presentation of educational material and organization of CD-ROM navigation.

Educational CD-ROMs should be no less interesting and attractive to children than computer games. The approach implemented in the multimedia course "Chemistry" allows to reduce the existing gap between educational CD-ROMs and games. At the International Exhibition "Milia-2000" held in Cannes (France), the CD-ROM "Organic Chemistry" became the winner of the "New Talent Competition", in which 110 universities of the world took part. We will talk about this product in more detail.

interactions with her. Term multimedia it is also often used to refer to storage media that allow you to store significant amounts of data and provide fairly quick access to them (the first media of this type were CD - compact disk). In this case, the term multimedia means that a computer can use such media and provide information to the user through all possible forms of data such as audio, video, animation, image, and others in addition to traditional means of providing information such as text.

Multimedia can be represented as the main components:

Text Audio Images
Animation Video interactivity

Multimedia can be roughly classified as linear and nonlinear. Cinema can be an analogue of the linear representation method. The person viewing this document in no way can affect its output. The non-linear way of presenting information allows a person to participate in the output of information by interacting in some way with the means of displaying multimedia data. Human participation in this process is also called “interactivity”. This way of interaction between a person and a computer is most fully represented in the categories of computer games. A non-linear way of representing multimedia data is sometimes referred to as "hypermedia".

As an example of a linear and non-linear way of presenting information, we can consider such a situation as a presentation. If the presentation was recorded on tape and shown to the audience, then with this method of conveying information, those viewing this presentation do not have the opportunity to influence the speaker. In the case of a live presentation, the audience has the opportunity to ask the speaker questions and interact with him in other ways, which allows the speaker to deviate from the topic of the presentation, for example, explaining some terms or covering controversial parts of the report in more detail. Thus, a live presentation can be presented as a non-linear (interactive) way of presenting information ...

Opportunities

multimedia presentations can be held by a person on stage, shown through a projector, or on another local playback device. A broadcast presentation can be either live or pre-recorded. Broadcasting or recording can be based on analog or electronic technologies for storing and transmitting information. It is worth noting that multimedia online can be either downloaded to the user's computer and played in some way, or played directly from the Internet using data streaming technologies. Media played using streaming technologies can be either "live" or provided on demand.

multimedia games are games in which the player interacts with a virtual environment built by a computer. The state of the virtual environment is transmitted to the player using various methods of information transfer (auditory, visual, tactile). Currently, all games on a computer or game console are multimedia games. It is worth noting that this type of games can be played alone on a local computer or console, or with other players via a local or global network.

Various formats of multimedia data can be used to simplify the perception of information by the consumer. For example, to provide information not only in text form, but also to illustrate it with audio data or a video clip. In the same way, contemporary art can present everyday, mundane things in a new way.

Laser show - "live" multimedia performance

Various forms of providing information make it possible for the consumer to interact with information interactively. Online multimedia is increasingly becoming object-oriented, allowing the consumer to work on information without having specific knowledge. For example, to upload a video to YouTube or Yandex.Video, the user does not need knowledge of video editing, encoding and compression of information, knowledge of the design of web servers. The user simply selects a local file and thousands of other users of the video service have the opportunity to view the new video.

As a rule, multimedia products are oriented either to computer media and playback media (CD - ROM), or to special set-top boxes (CD-i), or to telecommunication networks and their systems.

As carriers, means are used that can store a huge amount of a wide variety of information.

CD-ROM (CD - Read Onli Memory) - an optical disc designed for computer systems. Its main advantages are the versatility inherent in a computer, among the shortcomings one can note the lack of the possibility of replenishing information - its "adding" to disk, not always satisfactory playback of video and audio information.

CD-i (CD-Interactive) is a special CD format developed by Philips for TV set-top boxes. Among its advantages is the high quality of playback of dynamic video information and sound. The main disadvantages are the lack of multifunctionality, unsatisfactory quality of reproduction of static visual information, associated with the quality of TV monitors.

Video-CD (TV format compact discs) - a replacement for video cassettes with much higher picture quality. Among the shortcomings is the lack of multifunctionality and interactivity (for which it was not designed when it was created). DVD - i (Digital Video Disk Interactive) - a format of the near future, representing "interactive TV" or cinema. In general, a DVD is nothing more than a compact disc (CD), only faster and much larger capacity. In addition, a new sector format has been applied, a more reliable error correction code, and channel modulation has been improved. The video signal stored on a DVD - video disc is obtained by compressing the studio video signal CCIR - 601 using the MPEG - 2 algorithm (60 fields per second with a resolution of 720 x 480). If the image is complex or changes rapidly, visually noticeable defects in compression and its magnitude (data rate) are possible. At 3.5 Mbps, compression defects are sometimes noticeable. At 6 Mbps, the compressed signal is almost identical to the original. The main disadvantage of DVD video as a format is the presence of a complex copy protection scheme and regional blocking (a disc purchased in one part of the world may not be played on a DVD device purchased in another part of the world.

Another problem is that not all DVD-ROM drives on the market today read discs with movies recorded for home players.

Purposes of using products created in multimedia technologies

The main purposes of using products created in multimedia technologies (CD - ROM with information recorded on them) are: popularizing and entertaining (CDs are used as home libraries for art or literature);

scientific and educational or educational (used as teaching aids);

research - in museums and archives, etc. (used as one of the most advanced carriers and "repositories" of information).

promotional goal. Perhaps the widest use of multimedia products for this purpose is not in doubt, especially since popularization has now become some equivalent of advertising. Unfortunately, many developers sometimes do not realize that the mere use of well-known media (CD - ROMa) and software does not yet provide a truly multimedia character of the product. Nevertheless, one has to admit that the "diversity" of the presented works is a reflection of the existing public consciousness and humanitarian areas.

Scientific outreach or educational purpose. The use of multimedia products for this purpose goes in two directions:

1. Selection by extremely rigorous analysis of those already available on the market those that can be used within the relevant courses. As practice shows, the task of selection is extremely difficult, since only a few finished products can correspond to the topics of the courses taught and to the high requirements for reliability, representativeness and completeness of the material, which, as a rule, are made by teachers. This is due to the fact that specialists - "subject specialists" who have the necessary knowledge in the represented area do not take part in the creation of products.

2. Development of a multimedia product by teachers in accordance with the goals and objectives of training courses and disciplines.

Research goals. There is clearly a confusion of terminology here. In "pure" scientific developments, software is really actively used, which is also used in products created on the basis of multimedia technology. However, the sum of this technology can hardly satisfy the conditions and the process of scientific research, which implies the dynamic development of the process of cognition, since it fixes a momentary state or the result achieved, without giving the opportunity to change anything in it. In this sense, these tools can be used only at the stage of publishing the results of the study, when instead of the usual "hard" printing publications, we get a multimedia product. The most obvious and almost automatically remembered scope of multimedia products in the research field is electronic archives and libraries - for documenting collections of sources and exhibits, their cataloging and scientific description, for creating "insurance copies", automating search and storage, for storing data about the location of sources, to store reference information, to provide access to non-museum databases, etc. Activities for the development and implementation of these areas of archival and museum research are coordinated by the International Documentation Committee (CIDOC) under the International Council of Museums, the Museum Computer Network under the Committee for Computer Interchange of Museum Information (CIMI), as well as the Getty International Art History Program (AHIP). ). In addition, these organizations are engaged in the development of common international standards for documenting and cataloging museum and archival values, the implementation of the possibility of exchanging information components of research systems.

MULTIMEDIA (multimedia) is a fashionable word in the computer world, translated from English means "multi-media" and this term defines the cherished dream of most computer users. This concept defines information technology based on a software and hardware complex that has a core in the form of a computer with the means of connecting audio and video equipment to it. A computer equipped with a multimedia card immediately becomes a universal educational or informational tool for virtually any branch of knowledge and human activity. There are very big prospects for multimedia in medicine: knowledge bases, methods of operations, drug catalogs, etc. In business, real estate firms are already using multimedia technology to create catalogs of homes for sale. Technological multimedia enjoys great attention of the military: for example, the Pentagon is implementing a program of transferring all technical, operational and training documentation on all weapons systems to interactive video disks, creating and mass using simulators based on such disks. Companies specializing in the production of hypermedia publications - books, encyclopedias, guides - are rapidly emerging. In addition to "informational" applications, "creative" applications should also appear, allowing the creation of new works of art. Already, the multimedia station is becoming an indispensable author's tool in film and video art. Works on the introduction of elements of artificial intelligence in the multimedia system look very promising. They have the ability to "feel" the communication environment, adapt to it and optimize the process of communication with the user; they adapt to readers, analyze additional or clarifying information. Systems that understand natural language, speech recognizers further expand the range of interaction with a computer.

Another rapidly developing field of application of computers, which is absolutely fantastic for us, in which multimedia technology plays an important role, is virtual or alternative reality systems, as well as "telepresence" systems close to them. With the help of special equipment - a system with two miniature stereo displays, quad-earphones, special sensory gloves and even a suit, you can "enter" a computer-generated or simulated world by turning your head, look left or right, go further, stretching your hand forward - and see it in this virtual world; you can even take any virtual object and rearrange it to another place; it is possible to build in this way, to create this world from within.
